Mt. Meru is a dormant volcano rising up from Arusha National Park. Its elevation is 4,562 meters (14,967 feet). Trekkers often use Mt. Meru as a warm-up for climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, but beautiful Mt. Meru is well worth a visit of its own. The lower slopes are forested, and home to wildlife. Higher up, you will trek along the crater’s north rim to the summit, where the views down into Meru Crater and of distant Mt. Kilimanjaro are spectacular.
We offer a 4-day trek. Hiking is steep and strenuous. Accommodation is in wooden huts. Armed rangers accompany hikers through the forested lower slopes to protect against any wildlife threat.
Day 1:
- Momella Gate to Miriakamba Huts
- Elevation: 1500 meters (4921 feet) to 2515 meters (8250 feet)
- Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
- Hiking time: 4-6 hours
- Habitat: rain forest
We drive from Moshi or Arusha to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park to start our trek. The trail starts in open grassland and chances are good we’ll see wildlife–giraffe, elephants, antelope, and buffalo. An armed ranger will escort us through this area. We then climb steadily through rainforest until we reach Miriakamba huts, in a meadow.
Day 2:
- Miriakamba Huts to Saddle Huts
- Elevation: 2515 meters (8250 feet) to 3570 meters (11,712 feet)
- Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
- Hiking time: 3-5 hours
- Habitat: Heath
We continue our climb through rain forest, until we reach the heath zone, and walk through the giant heather plants. Along the saddle’s ridge, we have views of the crater and the Ash Tray. From Saddle Huts, you have the option to hike to the summit of Little Mount Meru for even more views and for acclimatization.
Day 3:
- Saddle Huts to summit
- Elevation: 3570 meters (11,712 feet) to 4565 meters (14,977 feet)
- Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
- Hiking time: 4-6 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
- Summit to Miriakamba Huts
- Elevation: 4565 meters (14,977 feet) to 2515 meters (8250 feet)
- Distance: 13 km (8.1 miles)
- Habitat: Heath
At midnight, we leave Saddle Huts and make our climb to the summit. The trail climbs steeply to Rhino Point, then to Cobra Point, then continues along the crater rim to the summit at Socialist Peak. We pause at the summit to watch the sunrise and take in the spectacular view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Then we start our return trek, hiking back to Miriakamba Huts.
Day 4:
- Miriakamba Huts to Momella Gate
- Elevation: 2515 meters (8250 feet) to 1500 meters (4921 feet)
